A Civil (War) Disobedience
Through a series of flashbacks triggered by a cursed case, Ethan and Lena River see Gatlin at the top of the war. Union troopers have set the city aflare, and Genevieve Duchannes, Lena's great-great-great-great-grandmother, is fleeing briar, her plantation home, because it burns to the bottom. Her mother and sister do not build it out alive.
In all the smoke and confusion, Genevieve runs into Ethan. Not our teller, however Ethan Carter Wate, Ethan's great-great-great-great uncle. (Whew, he is pretty nice.) If she goes Dark, she's going to lose everything she knows—she may even kill those she loves. Lena River is deeply scared of going Dark and worries that everything she does—the lightning storms, the broken windows—are all signs inform toward inevitable Darkness.
She's not the sole one in her family UN agency has gone Dark. Ridley, Lena's sultry cousin-german, went Dark a year agone. currently she's in collusion with Sarafine, Lena's mother, and can do something to stay Ethan and Lena River apart. Man, things extremely are not moneyed for Lena River.
During a reenactment of the war Battle of Honey Hill, Sarafine puts her endgame into motion. while not anyone realizing it, she had been nearer than anyone expected. watch for it… she was lurking within the body of Link's mother, Mrs. Lincoln! Creepy. Sarafine reveals her true kind Associate in Nursingd an epic clash with Lena River begins. Sarafine brings back-up, too: Macon's evil brother, Hunting.
Many secrets and lies ar disclosed throughout this confrontation between mother and girl. If Lena River goes Dark, all her lightweight Caster relatives (the majority of them) can die. If Lena River goes lightweight, all her Dark relatives—including Sarafine and Uncle Macon, UN agency may be a Lilum, a Dark Creature—will die. Bummer.
During the confrontation, Macon dies throughout a struggle with searching, and Sarafine stabs Ethan. With Ethan in a very bloody heap at Lena's feet, it's all spookily harking back to what happened to Genevieve and Ethan Carter over 100 years earlier.
And guess what? Lena River repeats Genevieve's mistake. She uses The Book of Moons to resurrect Ethan. In doing therefore, she goes unwanted, and she or he looks to be each lightweight and Dark.
