Synopsis :
Seventeen-year-old Ethan Wate has lived within the community of Gatlin, South Carolina his whole life. Ethan's female parent died in a very automotive accident recently, therefore he lives alone together with his begetter and their long-time domestic, Amma. Ethan simply bums around city, hanging out together with his ally, Link, taking part in basketball, and reading. Oh, and there is a mysterious unknown song on his iPod referred to as "Sixteen Moons" that seems and disappears indiscriminately.
Aside from that, nothing ever happens in Gatlin. however that changes pretty quickly once Lena River Duchannes rolls into city. in a very automotive vehicle. Yeah, that is however Lena River rolls.
Ethan and Link spot Lena River and her morbid motor on the thanks to college. Ethan's excited to fulfill the new girl—as a member of the Jackson High team, Ethan is anticipated so far in his social circle. he is disgusted these interchangeable cheerleaders, LED by the unacceptable Emily Asher, and he is dreaming of somebody new, smart, and attention-grabbing. No, literally, he is dreaming of a brand new woman.
Ethan's been having mysterious dreams, dreams of a woman falling, and Ethan failing to avoid wasting her. He loves this dream woman, even supposing he has no plan UN agency she is. Weird.
Unfortunately for Lena River, Ethan's the sole one wanting forward to meeting her. Gatlin does not take kindly to new people, particularly if they are completely different from the same templet that looks to own sealed out all of Gatlin's residents. It does not facilitate that Lena's the kinswoman of the city shut-in, Macon Ravenwood.
Weird stuff starts happening: windows shatter, lightweight bulbs short out, and Gatlin experiences the weirdest weather patterns this aspect of El Niño. All of this simply intrigues Ethan a lot of and a lot of. And to prime it all off, he acknowledges Lena River because the woman from his dreams.
Ethan struggles to urge familiar with Lena River. aware of being the outcast, she's reluctant to open up. however Ethan's persistent. Eventually, they expertise quite the icebreaker: a shared flashback to Civil War-era Gatlin. we've not seen that recommended anyplace on OkCupid.
A Civil (War) Disobedience
Through a series of flashbacks triggered by a cursed case, Ethan and Lena River see Gatlin at the top of the war. Union troopers have set the city aflare, and Genevieve Duchannes, Lena's great-great-great-great-grandmother, is fleeing briar, her plantation home, because it burns to the bottom. Her mother and sister do not build it out alive.
In all the smoke and confusion, Genevieve runs into Ethan. Not our teller, however Ethan Carter Wate, Ethan's great-great-great-great uncle. (Whew, he is pretty nice.) Genevieve believed Ethan was dead—she hadn't received a letter from him in 2 years. Turns out, he deserted. He did not believe the Confederacy therefore he jumped ship.
Their reunion is brief lived once Ethan Carter is shot right ahead of Genevieve in a very struggle with Union troopers. Genevieve is set to resurrect Ethan, and she or he commands her domestic, Ivy, to retrieve The Book of Moons.
Ivy tries to discourage Genevieve from victimization the Book. there isn't any moon, which suggests it isn't a decent night for magic. Plus, you cannot use The Book of Moons while not a trade. Genevieve disregards Ivy's recommendation and will it anyway. She'll attempt something to bring back the person she loves. Sweet? certain. Risky? positively.
As you may expect, the resurrection spell goes awry. Come on, will dark magic ever compute right within the end? Ethan is not brought back to life, Genevieve is turned evil, and every one her descendants ar cursed. Oops.
A Stormy Fore-Cast
After their flashback expertise, Lena River tells Ethan that she's a Caster, as in spell-caster. She has all forms of supernatural powers, some she will management quite others: manipulating the weather, billowing electricity, and commixture Milk Duds and popcorn. Okay, you do not want supernatural powers for that last one, however it tastes quite supernatural. Lena's family will do a full host of supernatural things, from shape-shifting to healing, teleporting to psychic phenomena.
As their romance grows, mysteries ar resolved, however a lot of queries ar raised. Macon and Amma repeatedly conspire to stay the 2 teens apart. they are afraid their relationship can upset the Order of Things. (You grasp stuff is very important once it's capitalized.)
On the surface, there does not appear to be something odd regarding Ethan and Lena's relationship. Sure, Ethan receives electrical shocks and shortness of breath once he touches Lena River, however that is what love is like, isn't it?
Over-protective adults ar the smallest amount of their considerations, though. somebody is once Lena River. The Darkest Caster of them all: Sarafine. It does not facilitate matters that Sarafine is additionally Lena's mother, whom she thought had been dead for over 10 years.
Not enough drama for you? Well however regarding this? Lena River is scared of her own sixteenth birthday, that is quickly approaching. because of Genevieve, once a Duchannes turns sixteen, she is Claimed. meaning that The Book of Moons chooses whether or not she's going to be lightweight or Dark. If she goes Dark, she's going to lose everything she knows—she may even kill those she loves. Lena River is deeply scared of going Dark and worries that everything she does—the lightning storms, the broken windows—are all signs inform toward inevitable Darkness.
She's not the sole one in her family UN agency has gone Dark. Ridley, Lena's sultry cousin-german, went Dark a year agone. currently she's in collusion with Sarafine, Lena's mother, and can do something to stay Ethan and Lena River apart. Man, things extremely are not moneyed for Lena River.
During a reenactment of the war Battle of Honey Hill, Sarafine puts her endgame into motion. while not anyone realizing it, she had been nearer than anyone expected. watch for it… she was lurking within the body of Link's mother, Mrs. Lincoln! Creepy. Sarafine reveals her true kind Associate in Nursingd an epic clash with Lena River begins. Sarafine brings back-up, too: Macon's evil brother, Hunting.
Many secrets and lies ar disclosed throughout this confrontation between mother and girl. If Lena River goes Dark, all her lightweight Caster relatives (the majority of them) can die. If Lena River goes lightweight, all her Dark relatives—including Sarafine and Uncle Macon, UN agency may be a Lilum, a Dark Creature—will die. Bummer.
During the confrontation, Macon dies throughout a struggle with searching, and Sarafine stabs Ethan. With Ethan in a very bloody heap at Lena's feet, it's all spookily harking back to what happened to Genevieve and Ethan Carter over 100 years earlier.
And guess what? Lena River repeats Genevieve's mistake. She uses The Book of Moons to resurrect Ethan. In doing therefore, she goes unwanted, and she or he looks to be each lightweight and Dark. Hmmm. Ethan, meanwhile, is resurrected, but Macon, UN agency would do something to safeguard Lena River, has died. as a result of Lena River went unwanted, Sarafine, Hunting, and therefore the different Dark Casters live to fight another day.
In the end, "Sixteen Moons" becomes "Seventeen Moons," promising another eventful year in Gatlin, South Carolina.
